Cultivation Practices for Pyrethrum in Highland Areas

19 October, 2026

In short: Pyrethrum suits cool climates and loose, free-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Key steps: raise beds, add well-rotted organic matter, plant 6–8-week-old seedlings 30–45 cm apart, keep the soil moist but never waterlogged, weed regularly, pick flowers when half to three-quarters open and dry them promptly. Trial a small area before scaling up.

Suitable conditions

FactorSuitable
ClimateCool year-round with a cold season for bud initiation; avoid long hot, humid spells
SiteHighland, sunny, airy
SoilLight loam, loose, well-drained; pH about 5.5–7
WaterMoist while establishing; tolerates mild drought later; very sensitive to waterlogging

Planting steps

  1. Prepare the soil: dig 20–25 cm deep, remove weeds; raise beds about 20–25 cm high and 1–1.2 m wide.
  2. Base dressing: well-rotted manure or compost at about 1–1.5 kg/m².
  3. Planting material: seedlings from seed of known origin, 6–8 weeks old with 4–6 true leaves, or divisions from healthy clumps.
  4. Spacing: 30–45 cm between plants, 50–60 cm between rows.
  5. Planting: on an overcast day; firm in and water well.

Crop care

Harvest and drying

Pick flower heads when about half to three-quarters of the disc florets are open, every 2–3 weeks during flowering, and dry them the same day – see drying and storing pyrethrum flowers.

FAQ

How long until flowering?

Usually a first flush within a few months; yields stabilise from the second year.

How many years does a field last?

Typically 3–4 years, after which yields decline and the field should be replanted and rotated.
